Interior decoration is not limited to hanging a few pretty pictures on the walls or draping your furniture with luxury furnishings. Interior decoration demands harmony with the surroundings and this is as truer of apartments and cottages as it is of interior decorating of churches.
Interior decorating of churches goes beyond just installing what looks good. If you want to go in for interior decorating of churches, you always have to keep in mind that the decorations and the paintings on the walls should match the age, physical structure and atmosphere of the church.
And most of all, you have to remember that the church is a place where people come in search of peace and so the interior decorating of churches has to complement that kind of a mindset.

Conventionally, natural limewash has been used for interior decorating of churches. And for good reasons too. Spongy in nature, a natural limewash coating allows the walls to breath and helps prevent moisture retention. As it is, most church walls are solid and contain a lot of water vapor and moisture within them.
Moreover, limewash is easily available and gels well with the surroundings of a church. And with age, the limewash finish improves in texture and appearance.
These days, people are favoring emulsions, or water-based paints, when going in for interior decorating of churches. But the problem with such paints is that they are water resistant and do not let the moisture to escape. This in turn leads to mold and algae forming on the walls.
Another factor going against the emulsion is their sleek, smooth looks. These modern paints moreover take on a shiny appearance as they age and hence do not gel well with the grave and antique-looking environs that the churches usually possess. However, there are many 19th and 20th century churches in Gothic style that look good with an emulsion finish.
Always remember that you will have to remove all the underlying layers of paint and decoration before applying a fresh coat. Piling up on the paint can cause all the paint layers to peel off under the weight.
While undertaking interior decorating of churches and especially paint jobs, make sure that the overall effect is pleasing and effective with some trial patches.
When you are thinking of interior decorating of churches for seasonal festivals or special occasions make sure that your decorations gel with the existing church decorations. That is, your wedding flowers should not clash with the Easter or Christmas decorations in the church.
If you are using duct tape for your decorations, ensure it does not leave any mark on the wood when removed. If there are wires in your decoration cover it to prevent it from scraping the wooden surfaces. You should not put up decorations or floral arrangements on the altar. Take care not to dirty the church premises with wax if you are using candles in your decoration.
Interior decorating of churches isn’t a difficult task. But you have to take care that you do not intrude upon the sanctity of the place.
