Here are a few tips to create a well-ideated baby nursery:
Theme
The theme you choose will decide the character of the room and all other associated contents. However, the baby’s likings will change with every passing age. Therefore, though cartoons like Pokemon, Scooby Doo, Winnie the Pooh etc. are great fun, they may become redundant after sometime and Superman and Batman may seem more interesting later.
Keep these character concepts in the form of toys instead of a nursery theme. Rather use a combination of colors, patterns and textures to create a thematic diversity. Themes that create a natural world are highly refreshing for a newborn. For instance, create a jungle theme with earthy and green color schemes or maybe a water world with dashes of sea green, ocean blue etc.
The theme must highlight in every component of the room and some thoughtful contents can actually generate interest and motivate the baby’s mind as it discovers the world around. It is best if the theme of the nursery grows with the baby and vice-versa. To that end, also keep some scope for innovative touches every year.
Color Scheme
This is obviously complimentary to the theme of your baby nursery decorating and designing plans. Keep these points in mind while choosing the color:
- Primary colors are highly stimulating but too much of it can cause sleep disorders.
- Soft yellows, lilacs, or creams are soothing and stimulating as well.
- Pink and blue is best in pastel shades and when coordinated with bright primary colors it creates a perfect blend. While the pastels ensure proper sleep, the bright tones generate curiosity.
- A variety of stick-on borders, that can be replaced as the baby grows, are ideal for creating a combination of colors like blue, yellow, lavender, sage or grass greens. Thereafter, co-ordinate these with the colors on the accessories, linens, furnishings and the baby toys.
- Color stickers for furniture also serve the same purpose.
Walls
The walls are the perfect space to unleash your artistry with colors and designs in conformity with the theme. Points to remember:
- A proper coat of base wall paint is vital to the ambience of the nursery. Some faux finishing is a great idea. Painting a base color first and then adding splashes of the other colors is easier then alternate painting with the colors.
- Baby hands can leave marks on the walls, so a semi-gloss paint could be easier to clean.
- After the paints have gone dry, add some fun and some enlightening wall hangings. Use foam boards with re-usable stickers to fix posters and prevent wall damage.
- Get more artistic with a mural on the wall.
Baby Linens
To begin with, the linens must be soft and pampering. Thereafter, follow these points:
- Changing linens can be an ideal way to keep refreshing the look of the room.
- Get many washable duvets that can be changed and washed easily.
- Have loads of plain white crib sheets that won’t pinch when its time to dispose them and wont spoil the nursery theme either.
Furniture
The furniture is a basic utility item while you go about baby nursery decorating and designing and must combine creativity and practicality. These are some of the stuff you must have:
- A sturdy crib: If you can afford go for one with convertible features that can alternate as a toddler bed, a daybed or even a headboard and footboard. Safety features of the crib are also vital. A firm mattress for the crib is also essential.
- Chest of drawers for storing baby stuff: Paint it with some cartoons or animal faces to liven it up.
- Dual-purpose furniture: For instance a dresser that is about waist high and can also double up for a changing table (which must have a pad cover) or a changing pad which your baby can sit on, while the top drawers can store diapering essentials. However, make sure the changing pad has a safety belt and a guardrail.
- A durable rocking chair that can help put your baby to sleep.
- Soft, deep seat cushions and pillows to rest your back while feeding the baby. Choose colors that match the wall border.
- A bassinet for newborns can be a cozy idea.
- A lidded waste bin and a laundry hamper.
- A soothing night lamp.
- A stimulating mobile over the crib.
- Some family photos, snug quilts, cuddle toys etc.
- Baby clothes hangers.
- A glider, which can be used for bedtime readings as the baby grows.
You should keep in mind that a single perfect baby nursery decorating and designing idea is one great stepping stone in the life of your child.
